Final Project – Media Studies 120
This activity can be completed as a final assignment in Media Studies 120 in lieu of a final exam, or it can also be modified as a major project.
It can complement the assignment “Exploring How Teens Use Media” as students can possibly use the information and data they collected from that assignment for this one.
The assignment does include other topic suggestions in case students cannot develop a plan and create a product using the results from their research. You may change some of these suggestions depending on what topics your class explores during the semester.

Exploring How Teens Use Media
This is an activity designed for Media Studies 120 that can be a response assignment after looking at and discussing different studies and reports on youth consumption of media.
The studies/reports in this assignment mention the Nielson Report “How Teens Use Media” and “Students like Social Media.”
However, there are also other reports and info-graphics you can easily find online that will provide data that students can study and discuss in preparation to do their own local research.
The assignment mentions that students will create media in an additional project which you can access by clicking here.

Grade 8 Math – Percent Lesson Activity (“Shopping Spree!”)
Grade: 8
Subject: Math
Curriculum: Atlantic Canada Math 8
Author: Krista Hamilton, Harkins Middle School, Miramichi, NB
Resource Type: Lesson activity
Description: “Shopping Spree!” is a lesson activity designed to enhance a lesson on percent. Students draw from a hat a ‘gift card’ that is worth a certain amount of money (all are different so all students will have different answers). There are ‘items’ of certain cost posted around the classroom. Students may shop these ‘items’ with their ‘gift card’. The object of the activity is for students to spend as close to the actual amount of their ‘gift card’ as possible (without going over). They are required to record: Original price, sale price calculations, tax calculations and amount left on their gift card.
Items for sale can be cut from a flyer or printed from an online flyer (make sure to hide the sale price and have them calculate it based on original price and percent discount)
